Domain Names
There are definite advantages to having a domain name. Depending upon the registrar and web host you can even have an easy to use "branded" email name to separate your business from your personnel email.
What is a domain name? It's simply a description of a websites "location" on the internet. For a company or organization, a domain name is similar to having a customized phone number. Registering a domain name on the internet is similar to registering a company name at Companies House. Once registered no one else can use that name unless they purchase it under another extension. If you buy www.ivywebdesign.com it leaves the other extensions still available, such as .net, .org, .biz and others. But .com is still the most common ending for people to remember. It is possible to buy all of main extensions if you wish.
There are several registrar companies that sell domain names but we recommend Network Solutions, a subsidiary of VeriSign. This is the company that we use the most, although we occasionally use one of the other main registrars. They are not the cheapest place to purchase a domain name but they have an excellent reputation and if you sign up for some of their web hosting packages your domain name is free for as long as your website is hosted with them. We will search domain name availability and give recommendations if your name is already taken. As long as Ivy Designs builds your website there is no charge for this service.
Depending on where your website is hosted at you may be able to have a "branded" domain name. This is an email address that ends with your domain name. Example: webmaster@cochiseleather.com Depending upon the web host you may or may not be able to download the email into your personal email program such as Outlook Express. Some web hosts only allow you to go online to view your email. Most companies allow you to have a minimum of 10 email address and some up to 50 email addresses using your brand.
Web Hosting
We currently are using three web hosting companies and which we recommend will be based upon your needs. They all have excellent records of "up" time and have been in the business pretty much since the beginning of the internet. All the companies have excellent transfer rates and site storage capacities for the web hosting packages they offer.
We DO NOT offer to put your website on our server. We feel that it's much better for you to own your own domain name and hosting package, nor are we are profiting from recommending you to a particular hosting company or domain name registrar, we have not signed up for any of their promotions. We feel by not making a profit from this that we are being completely honest in making our recommendations for what is best for you, our client.
